Stair carpet installed by our crew

Stairs take more punishment than any other surface in the house - they're the loudest, the slickest in socks, and the first thing to show wear. A properly fitted stair runner or wall-to-wall carpet fixes all three at once: quieter footsteps, a softer landing if someone loses their footing, and a finish that hides daily wear far longer than bare wood.

Our lead installer brings 32 years of hands-on installation experience to every staircase we carpet in East Texas, from two-story farmhouses on acreage outside Hawkins to homes throughout Wood County. We handle layout, padding, tackless strips, and finishing touches - waterfall or Hollywood wrap, French cap nosings, custom binding - so every stair lines up clean with no seam showing.

Wall-to-wall or a stair runner - which fits your staircase?

Wall-to-wall carpet wraps the full tread and riser. It's the warmest and quietest option and the easiest to keep clean, since there's no exposed wood edge to scuff or scratch.

A stair runner leaves the wood exposed on either side and looks especially good on staircases with painted risers or open balusters. Most runners run 27" or 32" wide with a custom-bound edge in a matching or contrasting tape.

  • Low-pile nylon - the most durable pick for a staircase that gets used all day
  • Wool or wool-blend runners - a premium look with natural stain resistance
  • Solution-dyed polyester - our go-to for households with dogs and kids
  • Custom binding in 30+ colors to match your trim or railing

Why carpet often beats hardwood on a staircase

Bare hardwood stairs look sharp but they're slick in socks, loud underfoot, and unforgiving on a dropped phone or a misstep. A good carpet cuts a meaningful amount of impact noise, gives older family members a softer landing, and takes the edge off a barefoot trip down to the kitchen on a cold winter morning. For dogs that lose their footing on wood or laminate treads, carpeted stairs solve the problem overnight - no more scrambling for grip.

Why carpet often beats hardwood on a staircase

How we carpet a staircase

We start by pulling the old carpet, pad, staples, and tack strip and checking the wood underneath. Loose treads get re-screwed and any squeak gets glued down before anything new goes in. From there we install fresh 8-pound rebond pad, tackless strip on every tread and riser, and stretch the carpet with a knee kicker and power stretcher so it holds tight for years, not months. Every seam is heat-bonded - no fraying at the nosing, no visible joints.

Carpet Stairs - frequently asked questions

Low-pile nylon and solution-dyed polyester both shrug off the constant friction stairs see day after day. We steer people away from plush, deep-pile carpet on stairs - it crushes quickly right at the nosing.

It'll hide them from view, but we'd rather fix them first. Every loose tread gets re-screwed and any open joint gets glued down before we lay new carpet.

Yes, as long as the treads are structurally sound underneath. We use a method that protects the wood, so you can pull the carpet back up and refinish the stairs bare later if you change your mind.

It wears well and looks sharp, but we don't recommend it if you have cats - the loops catch on claws and can run.
