When you book a free estimate with a big regional chain out of Tyler or Longview, you might get a salesperson who's never picked up a trowel, quoting a crew you'll never meet. When you book one with East Texas Floor Source, you get our owners - the same two people who founded this store in Hawkins back in December 1999, and the same crew that will actually install your floor. Here's exactly what happens, step by step.
Why We Still Do the Estimates Ourselves After 25+ Years
We're a small, family-owned shop - about 2,800 square feet of showroom on FM 14 in Hawkins - and we've kept it that way on purpose. Our lead installer has 32 years of hands-on flooring installation experience, so when he walks into your home for an estimate, he's not reading from a script; he's looking at the same things he'll have to deal with on install day - subfloor condition, transitions, how the afternoon light hits a room. That's a different conversation than one with a rep whose job ends the moment the paperwork is signed.
Step 1: A Quick Call or Form, No Pressure
It starts with a free estimate request online or a call to the showroom. We ask a few basic questions first - which rooms, roughly what you're picturing, any known issues like a squeaky subfloor or old pet stains - so we show up prepared instead of guessing.
Step 2: We Measure Every Room, Not Just the One You're Worried About
Our lead installer measures precisely and checks the subfloor - and out on the acreage properties around Winnsboro, Gilmer, and Grand Saline, that often means a look at the foundation or crawlspace too. On a slab home, it might mean a moisture check before recommending hardwood over luxury vinyl plank. It's the kind of walk-through that's hard to do properly in fifteen minutes.
Step 3: Samples in Your Actual Light
We bring real samples from the brands we've carried for years - Mohawk, Shaw, Daltile, Emser, American Olean, Mannington, Quick Step, and Bruce - and hold them against your actual walls and cabinets, in your actual light. A carpet or tile sample looks completely different under a showroom's fluorescent lights than it does in your living room at 4 p.m.
Step 4: One Written Number, No Surprises Later
You get a written, itemized quote before we leave - materials, labor, and any prep work spelled out, not a vague range that grows once a crew shows up. If financing makes sense for the project, we'll walk through what that actually looks like too.
Why We Don't Subcontract the Install
A lot of the complaints we hear from folks switching to us started the same way - a subcontracted crew nobody vetted, an install date that kept slipping, or a finished floor that didn't quite match what was quoted. Since December 1999, every job that's left our showroom has been installed by our own crew, trained by our lead installer. When something needs adjusting after the fact, you're calling the same family, not a call center.
What to Have Ready Before We Arrive
- A rough idea of which rooms you're doing first, even if it's the whole house eventually.
- Any known trouble spots - squeaks, soft spots, past water damage.
- Paint chips, cabinet samples, or photos of furniture you're keeping, if you have them.
- Any questions about maintenance, pets, or timeline - we'd rather answer them at the estimate than after.
