Luxury Vinyl Plank vs Hardwood: Which One Belongs in Your East Texas Home?

It's the question we field more than any other on an in-home estimate: should we go with luxury vinyl plank or real wood? Both are excellent floors. Neither is the right answer for every room. Here's how we walk homeowners from Hawkins to Tyler through the decision.

Durability and Daily Life

LVP's wear layer is built for abuse: dog nails, dropped skillets, sand tracked in from the lake. Scratches don't reach a stain layer because the pattern is printed and sealed beneath that wear layer. Hardwood does scratch and dent - but it also earns a patina, and a scratched wood floor can be sanded and refinished. A gouged vinyl plank has to be swapped out.

Water and Humidity

This is where East Texas tips the scale. Most homes here sit on a slab that releases moisture upward year-round, and our summers keep indoor humidity high. LVP doesn't care - the core is waterproof. Hardwood can absolutely work on a slab, but it needs a moisture reading, a proper vapor barrier, and real acclimation time in the house. If a room sees standing water, we'd point you at LVP or tile instead.

Cost Over Time, Not Just at Install

LVP is typically the lower up-front investment, which is why it wins in rentals, basements-turned-playrooms, and whole-home refreshes on a budget. Hardwood costs more on day one, but a wood floor that gets refinished twice over three decades often ends up cheaper per year than replacing vinyl twice. Ask us to price both on your estimate - we'll show you the real numbers for your square footage. Financing is available if you'd rather spread it out.

Our Honest Recommendation

If you have young kids, big dogs, or a slab with a high moisture reading, start with LVP and don't look back. If you're staying in the house for the long haul and love the look of real wood, buy the hardwood - it's the only floor that gets better with attention. We install both every week across Hawkins, Tyler, Longview, and Mineola, and we'll tell you straight which one fits your home.
