Built for East Texas humidity and slab foundations
Engineered hardwood is genuine wood on top of a dimensionally stable plywood core, and it earns its keep in a climate like ours. East Texas summers bring plenty of heat and humidity, and a lot of homes around Hawkins and Wood County are built on a concrete slab rather than a raised foundation - conditions that can cause solid wood to cup or gap over time. Engineered hardwood holds its shape through all of it.
East Texas Floor Source stocks engineered hardwood from Mohawk, Shaw, Mannington, and Bruce, and our lead installer - who's been installing wood floors for 32 years - will walk you through which construction fits your specific subfloor before you buy anything.

Why so many local homeowners land on engineered
Engineered hardwood delivers most of what people love about solid wood without the sensitivity to our climate swings.
- Stable over concrete slabs and radiant heat, both common in newer area homes
- Available in wider planks (up to 9") that solid wood construction can't match
- Factory pre-finished with a durable aluminum-oxide topcoat
- Installs floating, glue-down, or nail-down - whichever your subfloor calls for
- Refinishable once or twice, depending on wear-layer thickness

Most engineered hardwood starts as European or American oak, though maple, walnut, hickory, and other species are all available. Plank widths range from a traditional 3" up to a wide 9" board. Finishes span clear matte, wire-brushed, hand-scraped, fumed, and reactive-stained European looks.

Installation matched to your subfloor
We start every job with a subfloor assessment - moisture testing on concrete, a joist check where there's a crawl space or pier-and-beam foundation, and flatness readings throughout. From there we recommend floating, glue-down, or nail-down, whichever will actually hold up in your house. Every quote includes baseboard removal and reinstall, transitions between rooms, and hauling off your old flooring.

Engineered Hardwood - frequently asked questions
Yes, if the wear layer is 3mm or thicker it can be sanded and refinished once or twice. Thinner wear layers (1-2mm) do better with a screen-and-recoat instead of a full sanding.
Water-resistant, not waterproof. It handles an everyday spill far better than solid wood, but standing water from a leaking dishwasher or a burst supply line still needs to be mopped up right away.
It does, and it's one of the main reasons homeowners choose it. We follow the manufacturer's guidelines on subfloor temperature and acclimation time so the boards don't gap once the heat's running.
Floating installs faster and is easier to repair later. Glue-down feels more solid and is quieter underfoot. Over a concrete slab we typically recommend glue-down; over a plywood subfloor, either works well.
